\nA new version of ArchEX is ready! In this new version, which I call ArchEX 2021<\/strong>, I have added the Deepin<\/a> 20.1<\/strong> (latest) Desktop environment. Deepin<\/a> (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users<\/em>. <\/span>I came to like Deepin very much when I installed it in ExTiX 21.1<\/a>. So I thought why not install Deepin also in ArchEX?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

REPLACEMENT<\/strong><\/span>
\nThis version (210305) of ArchEX replaces version 200930. I’ve replaced Yaourt<\/a> with Yay<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Yet Another Yogurt – An AUR Helper Written in Go<\/a><\/em>. I came to know that Yaourt is dead. I.e. Yaourt is not being developed anymore. So in the new version of ArchEX I have upgraded all included packages, installed a new kernel (5.11.2<\/strong> – second latest stable kernel by 210305) and replaced Yaourt with Yay.<\/span><\/p>\n

NEWS 210305 about Calamares<\/a> Installer<\/strong>
\nI’ve finally managed to make Calamares<\/a> 3.2.17-3 (The universal installer framework<\/em>) work without big problems\/issues.\u00a0 Now you can use Calamares to install ArchEX in any language.
\n<\/span><\/span>

\nBefore installing ArchEX or any other Linux system my general installation instructions<\/a> may be of interest.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nWHAT IS ArchEX?<\/strong>
\nArchEX 64<\/strong> bit is a new (210305) Linux live DVD based on Arch Linux<\/a>. Arch motto is KISS<\/em><\/strong> (Keep It Simple Stupid<\/em>). ArchEX uses kernel 5.11.2-arch1-1,<\/strong> Deepin 20.1<\/strong><\/a> and LXQt<\/a> 0.16.0 Desktop environments. Deepin Desktop (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users<\/em>. About LXQt 0.16.0:<\/span> LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n

INSTALLED SOFTWARE<\/strong>
\nAmong many other programs, Firefox (for Netflix), Gimp, Spotify, GCC, NetworkManager and GParted – study this package LIST<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

LOG IN to Deepin\/LXQt<\/strong>
\nWhen the boot process is ready you will end up at LightDM<\/a>‘s login screen. Login as user exton<\/strong> with password live<\/em> to the Deepin or LXQt Desktop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wireless connections<\/strong><\/span>
\nUse NetworkManager<\/a>. You’ll find the nm-applet to the right in the panel. If your Network isn’t shown it is “hidden”. Then connect to a hidden Network. Just give NetworkManager your SSID<\/a> and connect. Watch this screenshot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT<\/span>: About how to increase cowspace (Copy on Write) while running ArchEX live (from DVD or USB)<\/span> <\/strong>
\nIf you want to install a program or upgrade the whole ArchEX system while running ArchEX LIVE you may get an error message saying that the system is “out of space<\/strong>“. Then run the following command:<\/span>
\nsudo mount -o remount,size=2G \/run\/archiso\/cowspace
\n<\/em>You can set the size to 3G, 4G or even higher if you have plenty of RAM<\/a>, but 2G is normally enough. You can check how much of the cowspace you have left with the command df<\/em><\/strong>. Watch this screenshot<\/a>.<\/span>
\nNOTE<\/strong>: If you have downloaded the ArchEX ISO after 210305 you will notice that I have already increased the cowspace from 1GB to 2GB. If you need more you can use the command above.<\/span><\/p>\n

INSTALLATION to hard drive<\/strong>
\nArchEX can easily be installed to hard drive of those who so desire. Use ArchEX Installer (Calamares<\/a>)<\/strong>. I.e. while running ArchEX live from a DVD or USB stick. Please r<\/strong>ead this INSTRUCTION<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInstall ArchEX to a USB Pen Drive with persistence<\/strong>

Install ArchEX to a USB Pen Drive without persistence<\/strong>
\nCan be done with the dd-command<\/a> in Linux. Please read this instruction<\/a>. In Windows you should use Rufus<\/a> 3.13 – see below.<\/span><\/p>\n

VirtualBox and VMware<\/strong>
\nArchEX can run and be installed without problems in VMware<\/a> in Windows. Watch a screenshot<\/a> when ArchEX is about to be installed in VMware Workstation 16 Player. Be sure to give ArchEX enough RAM. About 2 GB. <\/span>Also remember to disable 3D acceleration in VMware. (It won’t work without installing VMware Tools<\/a>).<\/span>

\nNOTE<\/strong>: For some unknown reason you can’t run ArchEX in VirtualBox in Windows.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Program Management in Arch Linux<\/strong>
\nArch Linux uses a proprietary system called Pacman<\/strong>. It is similar to that found in CRUX<\/a> Linux. Read about Pacman<\/a>.<\/span>
\nYou can also read all the documentation on Arch Linux<\/a>. Four commands are basically the only ones you need to use:<\/span>
\n1) pacman -Sy<\/em> (update the packages database)<\/span>
\n2) pacman -Syu<\/em> (upgrading the whole system)<\/span>
\n3) pacman -S MyUsefulProgram<\/em> (the package installation command)<\/span>
\n5) pacman -S –overwrite MyUsefulProgram<\/em> (in case you get an error about \u201cconflicting packages\u201d)
\n6) pacman -R MyBadProgram<\/em> (remove a package)<\/span>
\nVery simple!<\/span>
\nNote<\/strong>: You can also use Yay<\/a> \u2013 see below.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nErrors about archlinux-keyring<\/strong>
\nIf you get errors about keys (for example key A634567E8t6574 could not be looked up remotely) when trying to upgrade your system you shall run the following four commands as root:<\/span>
\nrm -R \/etc\/pacman.d\/gnupg\/<\/em><\/span>
\n rm -R \/root\/.gnupg\/<\/em><\/span>
\n gpg –refresh-keys<\/em><\/span>
\n pacman-key –init && pacman-key –populate archlinux<\/em><\/span>
\n pacman-key –refresh-keys<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Yay<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Yet Another Yogurt – An AUR Helper<\/strong>
\nIf you want to install certain special packages for example Google Chrome<\/a> and Spotify<\/a> you can\/must install Yay. Study this tutorial<\/a> about how to install and use Yay<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Yet Another Yogurt – An AUR Helper Written in Go<\/em>. Note<\/strong>: Yay and Spotify are pre-installed in ArchEX Build 210305. If you want to install new packages through Yay<\/a> you’ll have to run the command su exton<\/em> before yay -S MyNeededProgram<\/em>. If you’re not logged in as the ordinary user exton. (You can’t run Yay as root).<\/span><\/p>\n

Running ArchEX as root<\/strong>
\nYou can’t login as root from LightDM and you can’t reach the Deepin desktop in any way as root (superuser). If you , however, for some reason want to run ArchEX as root you can login in console mode and run the command startx<\/em>. You will then enter the LXQt desktop. Press Ctrl Alt F1 or F2 simultaneously in order to change to console mode.<\/span><\/p>\n

UEFI<\/a>\/non-UEFI computers<\/strong>
\nArchEX Build 210305 is now also for UEFI computers. I.e. before you can run ArchEX live you don’t have to<\/strong> go into BIOS<\/a> and change Boot Mode<\/a> to Legacy Support.<\/span><\/p>\n

LANGUAGE<\/strong>
\nThe default locale\/language is English. While installing ArchEX to hard drive using Calamares (ArchEX Installer), you can change the default locale<\/a> to Swedish or any other language.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rolling distribution<\/strong>
\nArch Linux\/ArchEX are rolling distributions<\/a>, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WHO should run Arch Linux?<\/strong>
\nMy answer: The system fits the “advanced” Linux user\/enthusiast, who would be willing to run an occasional command from time to time.<\/span><\/p>\n

BENEFITS of ArchEX\/Arch Linux<\/strong>
\n“Cutting Edge”-software and speed. You will for example always run the latest kernel if you upgrade ArchEX\/Arch (for example) every month.<\/span><\/p>\n

RaspArch<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for Raspberry Pi 4, 3 Model B+, Pi 3 Model B and Pi 2 Model B<\/a><\/span>
\nRaspArch<\/strong><\/a> is a \u201cremaster\u201d of Arch Linux ARM<\/a>. The original compressed system is of 231 MB. After I have added the LXDE<\/a> Desktop environment, PulseAudio<\/a>, Firefox, Samba, Yaourt<\/a> and Gimp the (compressed) system increased to 1520 MB. RaspArch is a \u201cready-to-go\u201d ARM<\/a> system. It must be installed on a Raspberry Pi 4<\/a>, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+<\/a>, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B<\/a> or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B<\/a> computer.<\/div>\n

A member on RaspEX<\/a> recently wrote this about RaspArch<\/a>: I\u2019ve used Slackware, Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu & Arch. I prefer Arch. Ubuntu is easier to install, Arch is easier to keep up to date. You do not go through big, painful, changes every year instead you just update, once in a while, make changes if instructed. Arch has most of the benefits of Gentoo without the pain of recompiling _everything_. When you do need to build a package in Arch its painless especially if you use one of the tools that support AUR (I like Yaourt). Arch avoids the politics of Debian and Ubuntu and delivers a great Linux distribution. RaspArch now brings these advantages to the Pi 2.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
